About us

The Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute (STI) was established in 1985 as the University of Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute and renamed in 1996 in honor of Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD - a pioneer in Transplantation, Surgery and Immunology.  The mission of the STI has been to improve the clinical, scientific, and social aspects of transplantation.  The breadth and depth of STI's efforts to develop innovative forms of transplantation distinguishes this transplant program from any other.

Clinicians and Scientists at the STI are committed to finding solutions to the transplant field's most challenging problems.  These include achieving immune tolerance, developing safer immunosuppression, and alleviating the critically short supply of donor organs.  Through fundamental, translational, and clinical research we aim to find innovative solutions to these pressing problems and to train the next generation of leading transplant investigators.
