Cell replacement therapy to cure Type 1 diabetes

Immunomodulation and gene therapy aimed at prolonging the functional life of transplanted islets and finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes patients. As a member of the Islet Isolation Core of the University of Pittsburgh, we isolate islets from humans, pigs and rodents for basic and transplant research. Other research interests include alternative sources for replacement islets to cure Type 1 diabetes including genetically altered porcine islets. Also interested in researching a role for C-peptide in diabetes therapy.
